On this day in Texas Stadium Cowboys Ring of Honor and NFL Hall of Fame member running back Emmitt Smith broke the great Walter Payton’s all time rushing record of 16,726 yards. He would finish the game with 109 yards rushing on 24 carries.

Smith, is the only running back in NFL history to ever win a Super Bowl championship, NFL Most Valuable Player award, the NFL rushing title, and the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player award all in the same season (1993).

Emmitt Smith would finish his NFL career with 18,355 yards and 164 touchdowns.
